In an effort to find a cheaper way to go skiing in the Alps, we decided to try a camper-van after meeting Mark from Oxcampers at a recent charity event. Mark’s enthusiasm persuaded us to give it a go! Heres a summary of how it went, what we learned and tips for the next time!
We left from Oxford and drove to the french Alps in about 11 hours. We stopped plenty of times for cuppas and even used the stove in the back for our lunchtime soup! The drive was quite easy. Upon arriving in Chamonix we stayed at Les 2 Glaciers campsite, just on the edge of the town. Using a campsite is important…. allowing us to shower, store kit and dry clothes in the drying-room and also to plug in a heater for the van. The heater worked… we were NOT cold! Despite freezing temps outside the van was snug and warm with a small heater. Each day we would breakfast in the van, then drive to a ski area and head up the mountains. Some days we skied back to the van for lunch using the gas stove, other times we ate at the restaurants. Similarly in the evening; some nights we drove to a restaurant, other times we cooked in the van. All in all, it was a very economical way to ski for a week, the campsite was about 130, diesel, euro tunnel and road tolls about 450. If you add the cost of the camper, and bear in mind you can eat cheaply in the camper, it was about 500 each for a weeks ski! Add to that we had transport whenever we needed it, we could drive to wherever the snow was best AND we had fun! I would happily go again in the van. Recommended tips are: use euro tunnel, don’t take too much, use a campsite with electric and a drying room, eat some meals out as a treat and enjoy the adventure.

We decided to hire Croyde for the half-term so that we could quickly get down to Cornwall. Great hire prices and a lovely van that took us there in good time. Comfy seats and plenty of space for the 3 of us. Economical and warm with a really good heater. We had lots of fun for 4 nights in Cornwall whilst staying in a camping pod but used the cooking facilities of the van too. We all liked riding around in it so much that we also went to Great Malvern on the last day of our hire for a bracing walk up the Malvern Hills which was made all the better for knowing that we would be having a lovely mug of hot chocolate in Croyde when we got back down again.
Hi Mark! We’ve just got home after our first weekend away in “Peter” (Peter was Louise’s Dad, he was a coach builder and cabinet maker and we thought he’d approve of the cabinets etc. in the van.) It was brilliant, we had a fantastic time and the van was ace. The bed was really comfy and the cupboard layout worked a treat. Thanks so much for such a wonderful conversion.

We hired Croyde for 13 nights, and travelled up to Western Scotland. It was our first trip away as a family with a 5 month baby, so we were hoping we had everything with us! The van was fantastic from the off, and was really comfortable on the long drive up north. Our first night took a bit of getting used to in terms of packing everything away to get the bed out, but by the end of the trip, we had the nightly game of Tetris down to a fine art! The van had everything we needed to keep ourselves fed and watered, with some really nice touches like kitchen roll and olive oil, and it felt so comfortable and cosy in the evenings, despite the howling gales outside! All in all, a fantastic trip, and we’ve got the bug now, so we’re looking forward to our next trip already!
We hired Croyde for Latitude Festival in July and it was fantastic! The service we received from Mark and Kyja was second to none; they were really helpful and accommodating and we couldn’t believe the price! The van was really comfy and had everything we needed. We’ll definitely be using them again!
Thanks Mark and Kyja @ oxcampers… Van was great, everything we needed, bit of luxury, and really warm. Really economical too…. Look forward to our next trip! Deb & Matt Smith
